SOLUTIONS IN THE EXTRUSIONAREA

Picture of Moldsonics application areas (injection molding and extrusion)

During our research activities, we also quickly recognized the great potential of our measurement technology for the extrusion sector. Through further intensive development work, the existing sensor technology was adapted to the requirements of the extrusion sector and is now ready for use.

THE BASIC PRINCIPLE

During the measurement, up to 10,000 ultrasonic pulses per second are emitted in the direction of the steel/polymer interface (e.g. barrel inner wall extruder), where they are first modulated and finally reflected by the properties of the plastic (pressure, temperature) and by the state of various elements of the plasticizing process (e.g. screw, mixing elements). These ultrasonic pulses are in turn picked up by the ultrasonic sensor, which serves as both transmitter and receiver. From these signals, characteristic variables such as melt flow, melt homogeneity or wear variables (barrel, screw and mixing elements) are derived for evaluation and optimization of the process.

THE APPLICATION

Different variants are available for mounting the sensors on the respective components (extruder, die, calibration). The sensors can be mounted on surfaces with a temperature of up to 350 °C without the application of external cooling. During operation, the operating personnel as well as the quality representatives receive continuous information about the process stability as well as the condition of the machine.

YOUR VALUET

The greatest added value lies in the non-contact measurement method and the gain in additional process information, which cannot be acquired using conventional sensor technology. Without intervening in or changing the process, you can effortlessly record and evaluate all your process-relevant variables.
